How to Troubleshoot a Dell Photo Printer 720

By Joanne Mendes

  • Overview

Troubleshooting a Dell Photo Printer 720 is fairly easy. There are three main problems that most printers encounter, and they can be fixed without having to take the printer in for repair. The first problem incvolves the paper jams or misfeeds that can occur as the printer is printing a photo or document. The second problem has to do with print quality: Colors don't look right, or the printing is incomplete or streaked. The third problem occurs when your computer sends you a message that it can't print because no printer has been found. Once in a while, operating systems dump driver files for no apparent reason. If this happens, you will have to reinstall the printer driver.

  • Paper Jams and Misfeeds

  • Step 1

Remove the paper that is jammed in the printer by opening the printer cover and gently tugging the sheet of paper out of the rollers. Fan out the paper, rearrange it into stack and replace the stack inside the paper feed. Attempt to print again.
  • Step 2

Readjust the paper guides so they loosely support the paper without causing the paper to bow out.
  • Step 3

Select "Maintenance" on the printer's control panel if the printing is not aligned properly on the paper. Press "Select." Choose "Print a Test Page" and press "Select." Print out a test page and see if the printer is in alignment by folding the paper in half and matching up the alignment dots. If they don't match, select "Maintenance" on the printer's control panel, choose "Dell Tool Box" and pick "Align Print Cartridges." Click "OK" to print another test page.
  • Troubleshooting Ink Cartridges

    • Step 1

Check the printer-cartridge ink levels by pressing "Menu" on the printer's control panel, choosing "Print Demo Sheet" and clicking "OK." If the demo sheet shows low levels of ink, you will need to get the cartridge refilled.
    • Step 2

Click "Start>All Programs>Dell Printers" to further troubleshoot the cartridges if the ink levels are fine. Click on "Dell Printer 720." Click on the Imaging toolbox.
    • Step 3

Double-click "Help" and choose "Maintenance." Click on "Calibration" and click "OK." The printer will calibrate the ink cartridges and print out a test sheet. If this doesn't fix the printing color issues, proceed to the next step.
    • Step 4

Choose "Printhead Cleaning" in the "Maintenance" section of the Imaging toolbox. Select "Basic Clean" and print a test page. If that doesn't fix the issue, choose "Deep Clean."
  • Reinstalling the Dell Photo Printer 720 Driver

    • Step 1

Uninstall the old driver. Turn off the printer and unplug the USB cable from the printer.
    • Step 2

Click on the "Start" button, choose "All Programs" and click on "Dell Printers." Click "Uninstall" and choose "Yes" in the uninstall confirmation window. Click "Yes" when asked if you want to restart the computer. Click "OK" to begin the shutdown process.
    • Step 3

Download the driver from Dell's website or use the installation disc that came with the printer. The Dell driver used by the 720 printer is R80999.EXE. Click "Yes" to accept the agreement terms. Click "Save As" and choose the desktop as the file destination. Click "OK" to start the download.
    • Step 4

Double-click on the driver-installation file icon on the computer desktop after the download has finished. Choose "Continue" to unzip the files and choose a file location. Click "OK" to unzip the files.
    • Step 5

Choose "Yes to All" when asked if you want to overwrite the old driver files. Click "OK" when the files are unzipped to open the installation wizard. After the wizard has installed the driver, restart the computer.
    • Step 6

Plug the USB cable back into the printer and turn on the printer while the computer is shutting down. After the computer restarts, it will recognize the printer and you will be able to print.
    • Skill: Moderately Easy
    • Warning:
    • Windows Vista is the only operating system that supports the Dell Photo Printer 720.
