Troubleshooting Dell Photo Printer 924

By Geoffrey Weed

  • Overview

There are many things that can potentially go wrong with a printer. This universal truth applies to the Dell Photo Printer 924. However, most problems with Dell 924s stem from improper setup or use, not from an actual problem with the printer itself. Do some basic troubleshooting before assuming that the printer itself is at fault.
Having trouble with your Dell printer?
    • Step 1

Make sure that the printer is properly plugged in to a working electrical outlet and that it is hooked up to the computer as indicated. There should be two separate cables running out of your Dell 924, a power cord and a USB cable that communicates with the computer. If both of these aren't plugged in, then the machine will not function properly.
    • Step 2

Check to make sure that you've installed the software and driver for your Dell Photo Printer 924. A window should pop up automatically and prompt you to install the software and driver when you first connect the printer to your computer and power it up. You do need, however, to be connected to the Internet for this to happen. If you don't think that the driver or software is installed, or your don't have Internet access, insert the "Drivers and Utilities" CD that came with your printer and follow the instructions.

    • Step 3

Ensure that the printer has the correct ink cartridges and that you're operating it according to instructions. Also, make sure that you removed the stickers and tape from the ink cartridges before you placed them in your printer.
    • Step 4

Make sure that you've loaded the paper properly and that there is paper loaded in the printer.
    • Step 5

Notice if the printer is lighting up when powered. If the lights on your printer aren't working then it means one of two different things: either your printer has an internal electrical problem and needs repair or it isn't receiving power from the outlet or power cord.
    • Step 6

Check to make sure that the USB cable is functioning properly. You can do this by using the USB cable with another peripheral device that uses USB to connect to your computer (such as your cable modem) and seeing if the cable works with that peripheral. If it doesn't, the problem is with the USB cable, not with the printer.

    • Do not attempt to repair your printer yourself unless you are an expert. If it is damaged or requires repair you should have a professional do the work.
