You might start with just a personal website, which is probably the most basic website there is. It could be just one page with a photo and a little text on it. There are many personal web hosting companies where you can get free space to post photos and daily diary entries and things like that.
Then there are options for people who have a business they want to represent online but they may not necessarily do business online. For example, maybe somebody who creates a clothing line wants to show it on the Internet but does not actually sell items using the website. It's kind of like an interactive business card for them.
Then there would be all of the different types of websites that are strictly meant for interpersonal communications. Those are websites that are built to network people together for friendship or business or romance or news or almost any topic.
