Unique And Crazy Uses For The Internet

Some unusual uses for the internet.

The internet is ever-present. Most people have access to it, either at home, at work, or at school. But most people do nothing more than send and receive email, and look up the weather or sports scores. The internet has so much more to offer.

For example, some museums are working on telepresence robots that you could log into across the internet and then "˜drive' around the museum. Because the robots would be programmed to go to certain areas and NOT go in other areas, telepresence robots could be active 24 hours a day. Telepresence make it possible to visit places no human could go, or to visit far off places, without leaving home.

But telepresence is only one of the near-future abilities we can expect from the internet. "The Cave" is being developed at several Universities. The Cave is a foam lined area, roughly egg-shaped filled with video monitors, speakers and microphones. Today, on collage campuses all over the world, musicians use Caves to create intercontinental jam sessions. In the future, you may take a class from inside a Cave, or take in a concert or play. With its excellent sound reproduction and monitors, the cave is the next best thing to being there.

And new inventions continue to create new ways to use the internet. For example, an inventor has recently announced an internet-on-a-chip. Combined with a short range radio, it would make internet communications possible for almost any object. The inventor claims that a light fixture that is "˜internet enabled' will be cheaper to control via the net, than to hire an electrician to run a wire to the lamp to control it. Of course, a side effect of that is that the light is controllable from any internet connected computer in the world.

But you don't have to wait for future developments to find unusual uses for the internet. If you have a camera, don't keep that family album in a drawer, put it on the web so the whole family can look at it. That's especially handy for out-of-town Grandparents.

Are you planning a family reunion? Web sites exist to help with the planning and to keep everyone informed as to what's coming up.

If you're researching something for school, try using the internet to access your library card catalog. When you've made your list of books, place them on reserve and the librarians will collect them up and hold them for you to pickup. If you find out about books that aren't in your library, explore "Inter-Library Loan" - you can check books out of libraries that are not anywhere near you. That's a real boon for students.

If your family is like many families, then getting together for birthdays take more than a trip across town. If Grandma and Grandpa are a long way from the kids, invite them to the next birthday party by web cam. A web cam and audio system can bring several people together whether is for business or pleasure.
