Try using foil the next time you highlight your hair, for a more natural and blended look.
Steps for using foil when applying highlights:
2) Next, choose a color for the hair.It is important to note that the hair color you start with has some effect on how well the dye works.Blonde hair can be highlighted more easily, but brown or black hair may need more time to achieve the blonde highlights.Use the color sampler that is included on the back of your dye kit to see how the end color should look. Also, when dying or highlighting grey hair, use a product designed specifically for grey hair.Grey hair has its own color properties, and using the wrong product can result in very strange results.
3) No decide how you want to dye your hair. When using foil, you can either achieve a natural blend of colors or a more streaky look. This can be controlled by the size of the strands of hair that you dye.The thicker they are, the more streaky the end result will be.Similarly, the more strands you decide to dye, the more striking the change will be.
4) Divide the hair into layers. You can't work with the entire head of hair at once, so separate the hair into layers, folding back the upper layers and clipping them to the top of the head. There should be three or four layers when you are done, but start with the bottom layer and then work your way up.Once you are finished wrapping and dying the bottom layer, move to the second, to the third, and so on.
5) Next, separate the individual parts of the hair you will dye.Depending on how natural or blended you want the hair to look, you can make these portions smaller or larger.Using the edge of your comb or a hair pick, weave up and down through the hair, separating the layers as you go.The hair will be divided into multiple strands, upper and lower strands, and it is the upper strands that will be dyed.
6) Wrap the strands in foil. Here is where the actual foil comes in.Using your hands, which should be covered by gloves to avoid accidentally dying your skin, take a small piece of foil about two inches wide and about the length of the person's hair. Lay the strand of hair on the foil and paint the dye onto the hair, making sure you do not accidentally paint the other strands of hair.
7) Roll the foil up with the hair and the dye inside. This will keep it separated from the rest of the hair, leaving only the strands of hair inside the foil dyed.Move to the next strand, and repeat the steps.
8) When you are done, portions of the person's head will be wrapped in foil being dyed.Wait the correct amount of time, and then remove the foil.Wash the hair thoroughly, using lots of conditioner.Dyeing hair causes it to dry out, and without conditioner, the hair may break or split.
9) Enjoy your new hair color!
