  • Overview

With the world seemingly becoming smaller, many people find themselves with connections on other continents. Whether traveling or living abroad, the ability to get in touch with faraway friends and loved ones is extremely important. Today, with the many choices of prepaid international calling cards, making an international call does not have to be expensive. It also doesn't have to be complicated. There are a few simple steps to making a phone call using an international calling card. Calling cards from different International calling service providers may vary, so be sure to read the directions before dialing. Most cards follow the below format.

    • Step 1

Scratch the back of your calling card to reveal the pin number.

Dial the 1-800 number on the back of the card.

    • Step 3

Enter your PIN number when asked.

Follow the voice prompts. These next steps may vary with different calling card companies.
    • Step 5

Have your international number ready. This will include a country code, often a city code and a local number. Country codes can be found in the reference section of any phone book, or online.
    • Skill: Easy
    • Tip: When talking with someone using an international calling card, remember that the usage is rounded up to the next minute. If you talked for 10 and a half minutes, it will take 11 minutes off your card's calling time.
    • Warning:
    • Using your calling card from a payphone often results in an additional $1 surcharge. This charge can vary by provider. Check with the provider that issued your card to see if there are any hidden fees.
