How to Use a Printer Cartridge Refill Kit

By Diane Dilov-Schultheis

  • Overview

If you own a printer, you know how much ink it can go through. This can be a hefty expense, if you have to purchase new cartridges each time you need ink. One way to save a lot of money on ink is to use a refill kit. You can find kits on the market for most all printers. Once you find the right refill kit, there are only a few more steps involved to complete the task.

    • Step 1

Learn your printer details. You will have to know the manufacturer, model and type (version) of printer you own. The ink refill kits are often created for specific printers. This information should be plainly visible on the printer. It will be read something like this: HP Deskjet 940c, Lexmark X83 or alike. This information can also be found on the printer's label or manual, if these are available. Make note of this information and use it to purchase a refill kit for your precise printer cartridges. Make sure you get all of the colors of ink you need to refill.
    • Step 2

Prepare an area that has enough room for the all of the items. It should be a flat surface. Cover it with several pages of the newspaper and place all other items within easy reach on top. Remove all of the parts from the refill kit. If you want, use an old shirt or apron to protect your clothing. Put on the rubber gloves. If you have not already done so, remove the old cartridges from your printer and place them on the newspaper.

    • Step 3

Refill your printer's ink cartridges. The exact process may differ among the various models or styles of printers, but the basic concept of ink refilling is the same. The cartridges will need to have a hole put in them or enlarged. Use the tools provided in the refill kit to do this, or remove any covers to expose an available hole. Use a syringe to get a small amount of ink from the ink bottles supplied in the kit. Place the tip of the syringe in the hole on the cartridge and very slowly insert the ink into it. Do not permit the ink to come out of the hole. Cover the hole with tape or covers provided and replace it in the printer.
