A UV filter is an ultraviolet tube light, which goes in the pond. What it does is, as green water passes by it the water goes into it and clear water comes out of it. That's basically how it works.

UV runs at such a high frequency that anything that passes light gets sterilized. As it gets sterilized, as that green water gets killed, because green water is single cell algae, it runs by the UV light. It starts to die and as it dies they club together. Then, when it comes together it will get caught in like a mechanical filter. The green water is so fine that it just passes through filters.

The UV is just a glass sieve, all you have to do is replace the ball may be once every 1-2 years.
