What are the best ways to get around in downtown Savannah, Georgia?
The historic downtown area in Savannah, Georgia, is fairly compact. It's a couple miles wide by a couple miles long, and it is possible to get around on foot to see what you need to see. But here are some good ways to get around in downtown Savannah, Georgia, and what you need to know about them.
* Foot. If you choose to not rent a car or use any form of transportation on your trip to Savannah, it is possible. You can get a taxi to take you from the airport to downtown. It may cost you $10. But after that, you can get wherever you need to be in the downtown area with your own two feet. Get ready to do some walking, however. There's lots to see!
* Car. You can rent a car in Savannah, and perhaps this is the best way to go. If you rent a car, you can take off and go wherever it is you want to be on a moment's notice, and not break a sweat in the southern U.S. heat. The main rental car companies servicing the Savannah International Airport are Alamo, Avis, Budget, Payless, National, Thrifty, and Hertz. Another thing to keep in mind when renting a car is that you're going to pay for parking as well. And in Savannah, that's not cheap.
* Taxi. There are plenty of cabs that can take you from the airport to wherever or between hotels, restaurants and the other sights. This can be an expensive way to travel, however. It can cost you a pretty penny to get from place to place, especially if you want to hop out to Tybee Island, a touristy beach on the Atlantic Ocean about 10 miles east of Savannah.
* Tour company. Savannah's main industry is tourism, so you better believe there are tour companies just waiting to take you from sight to sight and show you what you want to see. There are three or four main tour companies and they're all located in the historic downtown area, so you should have little trouble finding one of these places to help you get from place to place.
