Where to Take Vehicle Donations

By Nicki Howell

  • Overview

Donating your unused vehicle is a great way to help organizations in your community. Plus, you can save money on registration and insurance fees, and have an extra deduction during tax time. There are many organizations that have created programs to accept vehicle donations. You can support breast cancer research, building homes for families in need or provide transportation to dialysis patients. Here are resources for choosing a place to donate your car.
    • Step 1

Consider donating your vehicle to the National Kidney Association. Donations support transportation services of dialysis patients. And since trips to the hospital are consolidated, it reduces carbon emissions into the environment. You can fill out an online vehicle pickup form at the National Kidney Association's website (see Resources).
    • Step 2

Check out the Habitat for Humanity. When you donate your car, it supports building shelter for families in need. Plus, they will accept all cars, RVs and boats, regardless of the vehicle's condition. A donation form can be completed online (see Resources).

    • Step 3

Support the Breast Cancer Fund with a vehicle donation. A donation to this organization will support research into the environmental causes of breast cancer. The organization provides an online donation form, or you can call (877) 392-4483 to set up a pick up time.
    • Step 4

Check out Donate Cars USA which is an organization that helps you locate organizations in your community. You can locate an organization and fill out a donation pick up form directly online.
    • Step 5

Contact churches in your community. They often have programs to accept vehicle donations. Donations often support community outreach, mission programs or serving poverty in your area.
    • Skill: Moderate
    • Tip: Request a receipt for your donation. Your vehicle donation may be tax deductible, so make sure to get an accurate receipt for the organization you choose.
    • Warning:
    • Check out unfamiliar organizations with the Better Business Bureau. This will ensure they are a legitimate non-profit organization.
