The city goes back to the fall of the Roman Empire at which time people were runing from barbarians. Many of the Italians fled to the small islands just off the coastline and ended up staying there. They began building the city by connecting the islands with bridges. There are over 400 islands and I believe 118 bridges.
It is an absolute wonder of the world and it is so full of history and culture. There are many artists and craft people, which is what attracts tourists to Venice.
