People are looking for a victim. They are looking for someone who is easily cowed who isn't going to stand for themselves. If you stand up for yourself verbally it also suggests that you are willing to stand up yourself physically. It can deter a situation from happening. Confidence, how you carry yourself and how you speak and make a dramatic effect can affect whether or not you ever need to defend yourself.
Basically women get attacked more often than the men because there is a higher statistical chance that a guy will be able to defend himself. We are very proud of the fact that we have almost an exactly 50:50 break in our school between men and women. I know that is not true with most schools. A lot of guys learn how to defend themselves, but there aren't as many as women. We pride of ourselves on the fact that we have thousands of women learning how to defend themselves and one of my students is in a dark alley, she can give him one for one.
If you are being attacked, yelling "fire" can help because people will look into helping put out a fire. People are generally cowards. They don't want to reply or respond to a woman calling for help because she is being raped, but they will go to see a fire. It is very crazy, but that's the conventional wisdom and it seems to be played out pretty accurately.
