What Is the Best Way to Remove Mineral Makeup?

By Lea WhiteFeather

  • Overview

Whether you use conventional or mineral makeup, cleansing the day's cosmetics off of your face is a healthy habit to develop. After all, along with the makeup are impurities that have built up over the course of the day. When using mineral cosmetics, it is especially important to have a regimen that removes every last bit of dirt and makeup. The buffing motion used to apply powder mineral makeup will result in a more natural and seemingly flawless finish if your skin is clean.

  • Identification

Depending on the brand, mineral makeup is made either primarily or entirely of minerals from the earth, providing cosmetics users with a healthier beauty alternative to traditional makeup. Mineral makeup companies claim that the natural ingredients in their products make these suitable for even those with skin conditions and sensitive skin in general (see Resources). The heavy presence of mineral cosmetics on the market is perhaps proof that the absence of fillers, additives and synthetic preservatives in mineral products has indeed attracted buyers with a growing awareness of what manufacturers are putting in makeup and personal care products. To remove mineral makeup, you need nothing more than the items you already use to take off conventional makeup.
  • Procedure

Mineral makeup can be very resilient, so attempting to simply scrub it off with your regular facial wash and water may result in raw skin. Begin by wiping off your eye makeup with a cotton ball soaked in cold cream or eye makeup remover. Repeat if necessary, and go over your eye area again with a dry facial tissue to remove stubborn eyeliner and mascara. Use a napkin or facial tissue to wipe away any remaining lip gloss or lipstick if you still have a considerable amount on your lips; cleansing oil-based lip products off with water alone is not absolutely effective. Wash your face with a mild facial cleanser, rinsing thoroughly. Pat dry with a towel.

  • Misconceptions

Despite any claims you may hear about mineral makeup being pure enough to sleep in, you should still wash your face prior to bedtime. Regardless of the absence of fillers and preservatives in your mineral makeup brand, if you have been wearing your makeup throughout the day, there is sweat as well as debris sitting on top of your face. When you remove your makeup at night, not only are you sparing your bed and pillow covers from makeup stains and smudges, you are also giving your face the opportunity to benefit from rejuvenating creams. Some skin care products are too rich to wear under makeup or when you are physically active during the day, so the only time you can use them is when you go to bed (see Resources).
  • Prevention/Solution

Your at-home beauty regimen of removing every trace of makeup may be your preferred method to keep your skin feeling its freshest; however, there are substitutes that can help in the meantime if you are far from home and want to take your makeup off. Heavy coverage mineral makeup in particular may feel as though it is weighing your face down at the end of your day. For this reason, you can pack baby wipes in your purse. The gentle formula is not likely to irritate your skin if you aren't generally sensitive to most cosmetic formulations. If the minerals in your makeup tend to cause your eyes to sting as well towards the latter part of the day, you can invest in eye makeup remover pads that are more portable than a bottle of eye makeup remover and cotton balls. Remember to wash your face as usual when you get home, as these are only temporary solutions.
  • Considerations

Washing your face strips the skin of essential oils. If you want to keep your skin youthful, stay hydrated by applying a moisturizer all over your face after patting your skin dry following your makeup removal routine. Mineral makeup does not contain the oils present in conventional makeup, so someone with dry skin would especially benefit from including a facial moisturizer in her beauty regimen. Someone who already has oily skin can use an oil-free moisturizer.
