Ways to Decorate a School Locker

By Liisa Sullivan

  • Overview

Your school locker should be a reflection of who you are. While keeping it clean and well-organized are important, it's also fun to decorate it and make it your own. When at school, your locker becomes your safe haven -- a place to go to regroup and to make plans with friends. So, why not make it some fun? When you open those doors, the interior should make you smile and recharge you for your next class or activity. Here are some things to consider when planning a locker makeover.
    • Step 1

Plan a theme. Think about some things that you really enjoy. If you like animals, consider a safari theme. What about sports? If you want to release your inner jock, find pictures of sports figures you admire along with favorite team names, colors and more. Is fashion important to you? Glam it up with some glitzy mirrors, stickers and magnets. You may even want to consider a special shelf to stash your makeup bag. What about music? Why not gather together some posters of your favorite bands along with CD covers and cut-out reviews?
    • Step 2

Personalize your locker. If you are not the "theme" type, but prefer a more eclectic style, think of things that will express who you are. Hang some personal photos; find bumper stickers with messages that you believe in; or hang some of your own drawings.

    • Step 3

Get organized. Most school lockers are on the small side, so keeping it organized is important. More than likely you will have books, clothing and other personal items to keep track of. To make it easy to access things quickly, consider a shelf stacking system. You can purchase some wire shelf racks at a local office store to help keep things in order. Or you can find cubbies to stash your stuff. Most office stores will also carry these types of organizers as well. Magnetic locker hooks are also very helpful. You can hang your backpack, sweatshirt and more. And, while you're at it, you may want to add a calendar to keep track of classes and special events.
    • Step 4

Check with your school first. Remember, before doing anything too wild, to check with your school. For instance, if you want to wallpaper the interior or hang ribbons on the outside, make sure to get it approved first. Your school may have some specific regulations that it requests you to follow. Once you know what the rules are, have fun and be creative. You may even want to suggest to your school administrator to have a locker decorating contest. You can suggest awards like a gift card to the local book store or pizza place.
