What To Wear To A Job Interview

When going on a job interview it is important to carefully choose what to wear. First impressions are important, make a good one with the proper attire.

First impressions are important, especially since most of the time a first impression is the only one an employer has to judge you by when deciding who to hire. What to wear when going on a job interview is as important as a resume or job experience.

When choosing an outfit the most ideal is a dressy outfit that isn't too flashy. Looking respectable is very important. It seems common sense to wear nice dress to an interview for a desk or office job, but even an interview for a lifeguard position calls for professional dress. It leaves a great impression and shows initiative, professionalism, and respect.

The condition of the outfit is also important. All articles of clothing worn should be clean, unwrinkled, and without any visible stains. Wrinkled or dirty clothing sends a message of carelessness. Employers want dependable employees. A well cared for outfit is a simple way to show responsibility to a prospective employer.

Also remember to wear properly fitting clothing. An excessively tight shirt will not give the proper professional message. While a turtle neck sweater and ankle length skirt is excessive, it is not wise to wear low cut tops or mini skirts when trying to show that you are a serious person that will work hard for the company. A nice button up top with a moderate length skirt will do the trick. At the same time excessively baggy clothing will make you seem careless and unprofessional. A happy medium is the best for making a great impression.

A commonly overlooked part of every outfit is the shoes. Shoes should be polished and in good condition. Impress your interviewer with your care for detail by making sure your shoes look their best. Also make sure shoes fit properly and you can walk in them. Tripping over high heels is not only embarrassing but not easily forgotten. Also if the shoes are uncomfortable it can take your focus out of the interview and you may not be at your best.

Jewelry should be moderate and compliment your outfit, not take the attention away from you. It is important that your accomplishments and experience is conveyed to your interviewer. Flashy accessories can distract from your qualifications. Don't let your jewelry speak for you. It is much more effective when you speak for yourself. This same idea should be applied to makeup. A few moderate accents are ideal.

Prior to the interview research and find out if the company has a dress code for employees and follow it for the interview. Even if it may not be your normal dress, you are there to show the employer that you are what they want. Find out what that is and show that you are determined to be the best worker you can for them.

Don't underestimate the power of confidence. While striving for a professional look also try to feel comfortable in what you wear. If you have any personal lucky charms wear them. For example, a log time worn ring, or favorite earrings, or a nice blouse you love.

The most important thing to wear to a job interview is a smile. Do not under estimate the power of a positive attitude. An employer may interview dozens of potential employees just like you. A nice smile and optimistic attitude will set you apart. Leaving a memorable and positive impression is very important. An outgoing attitude shown with a smile will insure that you are not soon forgotten.
