If you are working inside it's fine to work on a wooden base, but that wooden base must be prepared first with some type of sealer which will make it more waterproof, and help prepare that surface to receive the adhesive.

Definitely. If you are working inside it's fine to work on a wooden base, but that wooden base must be prepared first with some type of sealer which will make it more waterproof, and help prepare that surface to receive the adhesive. The generic product it is called ceramic tile prep. It's what a tile setter will apply to a floor before it receives tile. I use a specialty product from Garland & White and we carry it in our store. It's important that people prepare wooden substrate before putting a mosaic on it and wood should never be used outdoors for mosaics because it will not last.

If you are doing exterior mosaics you want use a cementitious surface, which is something that's made out of cement concrete or a cement board. A lot of people are using cement board. The best substrate for an exterior mosaic is definitely of cement.
