Chives are most than just a seasoning. Throughout history they have been used in natural healing. In the Middle Ages, chives were thought to ward off evil spirits. Today we know that chives are a very good source of vitamin C, so used in your favorite dishes adds vitamin C to your system.

Chives are helpful in easing stomachaches, promoting an appetite, clearing stuffy noses and preventing bad breath. Chives with its many essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, iron and folic acids help promote a healthy body.

Chives are easily grown in a pot on a windowsill. When cooking with chives add chives toward the end because the heat will make them loose their valuable vitamin C content. Chives can also be frozen, just place them in an ice tray and fill with water.



Below is a recipe for cottage cheese and chives. This dish is very nutritional because it uses fresh chives.

You will need:

4 ounces of cottage cheese

1/2 Bunch fresh chives

1 tsp. mustard

1. Mix together Cottage cheese and mustard. Set aside.

2. Finely chop chives. Then mix well into mixture. Refrigerate up to four days.

This recipe can be used as a dip for celery and carrots or even seasoned crackers.
