During the winter months, one of the biggest problems I see in the winter, especially during the dry winters, is that people do not water. Your grass is dormant during the wintertime, so it is not actively growing and it doesn't need a lot of water, but it still needs water to stay alive, especially if you have a hard freeze. I would say the most important thing is keeping your lawn watered during the wintertime and you may only have to water once every two weeks. It just depends on what the weather is like. It's important to remember that anytime you water it, you always want to do a deep watering. Water for a long period of time to get the deep watering and when you do that, you don't have to water very often. So frequent, longer watering periods are best for lawns. You'll want to fertilize in the fall around September with a fertilizer that has a higher potassium level, which will help the roots to strengthen and to grow. A good fall fertilizer means that in the springtime, you have a really good root system in your lawn and then the foliage will flush out real nice. So, you'll stay with the lower nitrogen and low phosphorus, but a high potassium fertilizer.
