Winterizing your home: its necessary to make preparations for the winter season around your home. Learn how!

Well summer has ended and you realize that winter is just around the corner. You have to winterize your home for the winter season. Getting your home ready for winter will help save energy and will also help cut energy cost which will help you save money.

Some ways to winterize your home are to check around windows and doors for any drafts. This is done best on a windy day because you will be able to feel where the drafts are more easily. The best way to fix any drafts found is to put plastic on the windows or you can purchase 3M window insulator kits. These can be found in any store that deals with house supplies. You can put on storm windows. You can weather strip your windows and doors too. Make sure you take the screens off until next summer. Another simple way to help with drafts is to put up shutters or curtains.

Check the insulation of your house. Look for any gaps that are around your house. Insulation should be checked in attics too since heat is lost through the attic too. Insulate around water pipes and also around the water heater. Any openings found around the outside of your home should be caulked.

If you're burning wood you should make sure to clean out your chimney with a chimney sweeper. If you don't know how to do this you could pay somebody to do it because by

not cleaning the chimney out it can end up leading to chimney fires. Also you should check your chimney for simple things such as a bird nest.

If you heat with fuel oil, make sure you check out your furnace to make sure it's working. Buying a programable thermostat will help save energy by that your able to program the thermostat to be at a lower temperature when your at work or sleeping and can have it set at a higher temperature when your home. You should check your fuel tank to see if you need to have it filled with fuel oil. There's also a program called energy assistance available for people who have a low income to help them pay for

their fuel costs.

If your using a fireplace check it out to make sure it's working well. If you decide that you will not be using the fireplace. You should close up the chimney because heat can be lost through the fireplace's opening.

Consider buying a carbon monoxide detector because this will let you know if you have carbon monoxide poisioning present in your home. Carbon Monoxide is a poisioness gas that isn't very easily detected by smell. If not detected carbon monoxide poisioning usually ends in death. Buying a detecter could save you and your family's life.

Taking the time to prepare your home for winter will help to keep you warm through the winter season. It will also help you save on energy which in turn will save you money.
