Travel guide for planning a vacation or trip to Wisconsin, including top tourist attractions and activities.
Wisconsin is much more than dairy farms and football teams. Wisconsin has something to offer for nearly every type of traveler that steps foot in this beautiful state.
Waterfalls
In the northeastern part of the state, Marinette County offers many beautiful waterfalls to visit, and have been named the Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin. Most of the falls are within the state park system, with a few exceptions, one being Piers Gorge located across the state's northern border in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Piers is included though as its beautiful bluffs at the top of the Pier's fall system are a major scenic visiting spot for those passing through the small village of Niagara on the Wisconsin side of the border. Other waterfalls in Marinette County include Veteran's Falls on the Thunder River, Strong Falls, Twelve Foot Falls, Eighteen Foot Falls, Eight Foot Falls, Horseshoe Falls, Dave Falls, and Bull Falls, all located on the Peshtigo River. Several more falls also exist in Marinette County, thus making their moniker of Waterfall Capital of Wisconsin well earned. Admittance to most requires a state park sticker or a daily pass, which normally runs just a few dollars. To receive a map of the complete waterfall system, contact Marinette County Tourism.
Wisconsin Dells
Wisconsin Dells was considered by many to be the Waterpark Capital of the World, long before water park was a phrase that every kid screamed at the mention of a vacation. The Dells offer up every child's dream of oversized swimming pools with gigantic slides to match, at lodges such as The Great Wolf Lodge and The Kalahari Resort. Currently, Wisconsin Dells also offers something for nearly every type of traveler. From Mt. Olympus Theme Park, offering exactly what its name implies, to the Goody, Goody Gum Drop Kitchens, offering an array of candy, to the Wilderness Hotel and Golf Resort, which offers an indoor-outdoor Waterpark in conjunction with a modern, full amenities golf resort. Other places of interest include numerous Bed and Breakfasts, spas, and restaurants offering cuisine from around the world for those looking for a romantic getaway, boat tours to view their local scenic rock wonders, antique hunting, and museums including the world famous Ripley's Believe it or Not!
Green Bay
Home to the Green Bay Packers football franchise, Green Bay also offers a variety of attractions. In recent years, Green Bay has become a gateway for those looking to escape the congestion of larger cities, or those who live rurally and would like to get a taste of city life without the congestion associated with many big cities.
Attractions and amenities include the Austin Straubel airport, conveniently located directly across from The Oneida Bingo and Casino. Great for those looking for a taste of the nightlife often associated with larger cities such as Las Vegas. For more family oriented attractions, visit The Neville Museum, located on the shores of the Fox River, offering exhibits in science, art, and history. Just eight miles north of Green Bay, the New Zoo offers one of the Midwest's newest and constantly expanding zoos. From larger animals such as lions and bears, to a petting zoo that houses goats and other small animals, the New Zoo has something for everyone. The Heritage Hill Living Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the past through twenty-four restored and historic buildings. More than just the buildings is the recreation of life from the past, through over eleven thousand artifacts and numerous hands-on activities offered to visitors, with my favorite being the baking of corn bread on top of a stove.
