No. Pilates was invented by a man who was working with dancers, so his main concern in the focus of his style of movement was to assist dancers to be stronger in their core, to be able to perform their dance movements safely and with more power and grace. In yoga it's a much broader system, which includes what we call core strengthening and also includes things like flexibility training as well as deep relaxation, meditation type skills. I think Pilates and yoga can be integrated into somebody's fitness routine and I absolutely think that they are a fine combination, but they are different. I would say that for the beginner Pilates is probably going to be more intense. If you have someone who really wants to strengthen their abdomen and back then Pilates is more appropriate. Going into yoga, typically beginners are treated very gently and things start out fairly slowly. There are some forms of Hatha Yoga that are very intense, even at the beginner level, like Ashtanga Yoga for example - it's probably the most rigorous form of Hatha Yoga available these days.
