Yorkshire Terrier Care

How to care for a Yorkshire terrier dog.

The Yorkshire Terrier is an extremely popular breed in the US. It is a small dog with huge courage and fight in it. It has natural instincts to hunt small game. This dog is confident with a self-important air. Its nickname is the Yorkie. Yorkies are like toy dogs which can fit into small homes. They get sufficient exercise just by running around enclosed spaces. Your Yorkie loves toys as it is intelligent enough to engage in self-play with them. It is rather playful but can act as a good guard dog as it will bark at strangers.

Yorkie pups are born black with tan colored extremities. The coat colors come out with maturity. The final color of a Yorkie pup's coat is anyone's guess.

A Yorkie's hair is single coat and does not shed. This makes it is a very clean pet for young kids and people who are allergic to dog hair. The hairs grow longer and trimming needs to be done. When you go to a professional groomer, you can request for a certain " hairstyle " for your Yorkie. It is a common practice to tie up long hair at the crown with a ribbon. Long facial hairs need daily maintenance as food tends to get stuck there. You need a wet cloth to wipe off food stains on the hair. Use a wide-toothed comb to untangle any mess.

Your Yorkie's body hair needs daily brushing. Usually only the show dogs are kept with long hairs as a lot of time is spent grooming and bathing the Yorkie. If you don't have that much time trim your Yorkie's hair short for its cleanliness and your convenience.

The Yorkie's long hair getd matted around the anus. Subsequently, compacted feces results. The Yorkie becomes uncomfortable. You need to rectify this before it becomes serious.

The Yorkie's long hair may also get into its eyes and cause irritation. That is why lengthy hair needs to be trimmed or tied up.

Yorkies are very energetic and need to exercise and play to be happy. However, Yorkies tend to be bossy and you need to be firm with it during training sessions. They know that they're cute and will whine and whimper for something. You need to be firm and consistently refuse to be " blackmailed " by a Yorkie's tricks. If you experience persistent problems in training your Yorkie, you may need to enroll it in an obedience school.
