Do It Yourself: Build Patio Furniture

Making your own custom patio furniture saves you money, and it is easy to do. Learn how to start building with these tips and instructions.

If you're a do it yourselfer around the house, and you need some furniture to use on your patio, you can easily make your own and save yourself loads of money in the process! You can design, and then build your furniture out of many natural materials that will give your patio a warm, rustic look. These materials include grape vines, most types of hardwoods, and even two by four pieces of wood. Two by fours are great to use because they are relatively inexpensive to buy and they are also easy to use. You won't need to do any fancy cutting with an electric saw. Plus, two by fours will build a rugged, durable piece of furniture.

You can start building your patio furniture by assembling a wooden chair that you and your family can relax in. To do this, you'll need to put on protective eyewear first. Then, measure and cut four pieces of two by four wood approximately twenty eight inches long. Lay the pieces into a square, and then secure the corners together with galvanized wood screws. This will be the base of your patio chair.

The next step is to measure and cut four more pieces of the wood. These will be the legs of the chair, and they'll need to be approximately twenty four inches long. (But you can make them either higher or lower to suit your body size.) Place each piece, one at a time, in an inside corner of the base, and secure them on by using galvanized wood screws.

Now, you'll need to make the back of the chair. You'll need two more two by fours that measure fifteen inches long. And, you'll need three more pieces that will finish the back of the chair. Use additional wood screws to secure the two longest pieces vertically to the base. Then, screw the shorter pieces horizontally across those two pieces

In order to complete your new patio chair, you'll need to add arms to it. To enhance the rugged look of this piece of furniture, the arms will be simple, yet functional. Measure and cut- you should be getting good at this by now- two- two by fours that measure approximately twenty four inches long. And, you'll also need four more pieces that measure twelve inches long.

Place two of the twelve inch pieces of wood on one side of the base of the chair. They should be positioned a few inches from the front, and, a few inches from the back. Secure them into place with galvanized wood screws. Then, repeat this process with the other two pieces.

Finally, you can either paint, stain, or just apply a clear protective varnish to your new patio chair, and then it will be ready for use!

When you're ready for more pieces, you can make end tables, a lounger, a plant stand- any type of furniture that you want for your patio by using plain old two by fours. Not only are they rustic looking, but they are also durable and long lasting.
